Vics lose out to Queens Royal in Harold Jones Cup Final

The Vics Wallasey League side disappointingly lost out to their arch rivals Queens Royal “A” in the Harold Jones Cup Final at an excellent Royden Hall green last night. The Vics were up against it right from the off with only 3 winners in the front four and 6 in the first eight. Robby Franklin and John Devlin both had decent leads before being pegged back and finally beaten 21-16 and 21-18 respectively. Ian Sherbrooke was 16-14 up before losing the jack and then the match 21-16. This was the pattern of the night for the Vics with Queens Royal seemingly gaining the advantage at vital times in most games. Neil Sherbrooke battled back from 07-15 down to reverse the trend and post an excellent 21-17 winning card. Unfortunately for the Vics the match went away from them in the middle four with only Dave Gilmore winning, with a tremendous 21-11 victory.  After 8 blocks the Vics were 27 shots down and this was the result at the end of the match despite 2 brilliant victories by Matt Gilmore and Robby Hall, 21-13 and 21-10 respectively, in the back four. Overall Queens Royal just had too much on the night for the Vics and Skipper Mally Johnson will have to revitalise his troops for what could be a difficult Presidents Cup quarter final on Tuesday against Quarry Vikings with the Vics conceding 72 shots to the handicappers.
