Away win at last for “B” team at Wallasey RBL.

The afternoon “B” team finally managed an away victory in the League for the first time this season with a narrow, though comfortable 11 shot win at Wallasey RBL. Three winners in the first four blocks saw the Vics off to a great start, with “Dynamo” Dave Leonard leading the way and continuing his recent good run of form, with a comfortable 21-13 victory which was closely followed by the “Mercurial” C.K.Pau winning 21-14. Ernie Peers fought all the way to the end with his final wood of the day seeing him through to 21-20 win after a terrific struggle. Another three winners in the middle four saw the Vics firmly in control with “Mr Cool Suntan”, Bill Purcell, ignoring the ribald comments from this reporter and producing an excellent display on a really bumpy green, similar to his other home at Great Meols, to run out a brilliant 21-08 winner. Derek Thomas had to hold off a late recovery from his opponent before eventually winning 21-16 and John Brandon produced a solid display, in his first “B” team League match this season, to come off a 21-18 winner. Etches “The Enforcer” had to really dig deep to eventually win 21-20 with Keith showing just how tough an opponent he is for anyone in this Division. The top table of administrators in the Club must have had other things on their minds yesterday with the President Dave Bosworth, Chairman Brian Buck and Secretary Peter Dodd all diplomatically managing to lose their matches knowing that a win was on the cards for the Vics. Such forethought for the opposition underlines why these three “Gentlemen” hold such high office in the Club.

“A” team dodge the showers to beat Manor by 52 shots.

The Vics afternoon “A” team beat Manor Road by 52 shots on a very heavy and unsurprisingly wet green at Ashton Park yesterday. Dodging the heavy showers all afternoon, the Vics had sufficient firepower to gain the valuable aggregate point from their welcome visitors from Wallasey. With two winners each in the first four blocks the Vics were surprisingly a good 19 shots ahead thanks to the “Webmaster’s” 21-08 win and the “Injured Golfer’s” (Alan Hughes) 21-11 victory. Peter Dodd of course had mixed feelings about his 21-08 victory over a team mate from his evening bowls commitments, no doubt there will be some insults flying his way on Thursday night. Ian Cameron produced an excellent 21-12 win as a late call up to the team and Elwyn Williams had a comfortable 21-14 winning scorecard. Bernie Owen threw away a huge early lead but still managed to triumph 21-17 and Ken Palin had a welcome, if tough, 21-19 victory. Skipper Billy Atkinson showed no mercy to one of his County team mates with a comprehensive 21-07 to wrap up a good display from the Vics. Next up for the Vics is a tough away match at Heswall RBL followed by a Shield match on Thursday against Bronze when the Vics have to try and recover a 65 shot handicap at Oxton Conservative Club.
