Charity Day Success

Yesterday’s Annual Charity Day went ahead under ever changing weather conditions at Manor Road and despite heavy rain at times, mixed in with fine sunny spells, the event saw West Kirby Victoria retain the George Gilmore Memorial Trophy with a 44 shot win against a Wallasey Select side. The real winners of the day however were the Elm House Trust who will benefit by the £550 raised by the bowlers who took part, the various sponsors of the event and the generosity of the spectators present. I really didn’t want to print the scorecard but I feel that all the bowlers who took part today deserve special praise in the sometimes adverse weather conditions and the best way to show my appreciation for their efforts was in fact to list all the players whether they won or lost. After an enjoyable day Mrs Ethel Gilmore presented the Trophy to the West Kirby Captain for the day, appropriately her granddaughter Nicky Gilmore.

“B” team brush aside Wallasey RBL with a clean sweep of winners.

The afternoon “B” team, at home for the first time this season in their league double header, brushed aside Wallasey Royal British Legion last Wednesday with a complete clean sweep of winners and an 81 shot advantage to take to Withens Lane this week. C.K. “Powerhouse” Pau was the star for the Vics with an awesome 21-01 winning display that was closely followed by a couple of excellent 21-06 wins for Ernie Peers and Brian Ibbotson. Ian Cameron continued his run of good form with a comprehensive 21-11 victory and there were a couple of comfortable 21-15 wins for Don Ibbotson and Dave Leonard, with “Dynamo Dave” completing a hat trick of League victories to put his early season woes behind him. Bill Purcell and Keith Etches both came through difficult games to record 21-18 wins and Skipper Derek Thomas was made to fight hard to eventually triumph 21-19. Club President and “supporter extrordinaire”, Dave Bosworth, battled hard throughout his game to finally overcome a game opponent 21-20. Hopefully, with the pressure of having to come from behind in all the matches so far this season now removed, the Vics can go on and win the away fixture and garner much needed points in their efforts to climb the League Table. One of the features of the “B” team this season has been the lenient reporters comments on Bill Purcell’s performances but now that his holidays are over and he is up and running and winning, the critical eye and pen will be falling upon him over the next few weeks.
