Four winners not enough for “B” team in Cup Tie but “Dynamo” Dave gets off the mark with fine first win for the Vics.

The Vics afternoon “B” team lost out against Birkenhead Park in the 1st Round of the Centenary Shield yesterday, at a very wet Pensby green. With only four winners out of the ten games, the Vics did not do enough to really worry their opponents in the damp conditions. One bright spark for the Vics yesterday however was the performance of “Dynamo” Dave Leonard in his excellent 21-13 defeat of Derek Jones. As a newcomer to the Club this season, Dave has been anxious to prove to his new team mates that he can be a force to be reckoned with in this League. With his performance yesterday, any doubts he had will now be dismissed and I fully expect Dave to start performing well on a regular basis. It is a fact that 6 weeks into the season Dave has only managed to play 1 home game so far because of cup ties and hospital appointments and once he gets into the swing of the Vics green he will be challenging the players at the top of the averages table. Skipper Derek Thomas also posted a winning 21-13 scorecard to share the sweep and Eric Neal stepped up from the “C” to gain a fine 21-15 win. Bill Purcell bowling at number 10 for a change, was the only other Vics winner on the day with a marathon 21-20 victory. Once again however the Vics did not operate as they should be doing away from the sanctuary of Ashton Park and until the run of single figure losers away from home is halted (4 yesterday), any hopes of challenging at the top end of the League will soon disappear.

“Magic” Matty helps Vics qualify for Harold Jones Cup semi finals.

The Vics Wallasey League side qualified to meet Manor Road “B” in next months semi finals of the Harold Jones Cup on Tuesday, with a 22 shot win against Liscard after conceding 60 shots to their opponents due to the Handicap system. Matty Gilmore was on fire with an easy 21-02 victory that was followed by further single figure wins for Brian Leonard (21-06), Robby Franklin (21-06), Neil Sherbrooke (21-08) and Jamie Fitzpatrick (21-09). The Vics did, surprisingly, have 3 losers on the night but were never in danger of a shock defeat and will be confidant of further progress against Manor Road “B”. There could however be a few shocks in store from some of the Manor Road bowlers with West Kirby Victoria connections.
