Vics Birkenhead League side trounced by 75 shots at Gladstone.

The Vics Birkenhead League side travelled to Gladstone last night and after a nightmare display, found themselves on the receiving end of a 75 shot thrashing. With only 3 winners on the night, the Vics display went from bad to worse with 5 single figure losers. On a wet but true Church Road green, Neil Sherbrooke proved that he remains one of, if not the most consistant performers at the club with a magnificent 21-08 victory over John Ellis. That was it for the Vics until the last two on the green, the two John’s, “Lean Machine” Lloyd and “Dapper” Devlin produced the Vics only two other winning cards of the night. John Lloyd gave a brilliant display in a fine 21-14 victory and John Devlin kept at it right to the end in a marathon 21-20 win. Karl Sherbrooke was the best of the rest for the Vics with a narrow 19-21 defeat but this wake up call will hopefully produce a better performance against Oxton in the Victory Cup at Burton’s on Wednesday, when as holders of the trophy, the Vics start off with a 12 shot deficit. The next League outing for the Vics is next Friday away to Tixall.

Another home victory for “C” team but no aggregate point despite 43 shot win.

The Vics afternoon “C” team had another convincing home win yesterday when they beat Tixall “B” by 43 shots at West Kirby. Bernie Davies was the star of the show yesterday with a magnificent 21-05 winning scorecard, once again proving that his unavailability on a Wednesday is a loss for the “B” team. John Brandon quickly attoned for last week’s nightmare display with an excellent 21-07 victory and Lawrie Blackburn, unusually playing at number 10, followed John with an equally comprehensive 21-09 win. Reg Armitage found some of his best form to run out a 21-12 winner and there were 2 tough games involving, 21-18 wins, for Bill Spraggett and Eddie Dodd. Eddie was another player bouncing back after a nightmare last week. Skipper Brian Buck was involved in an excellent, sporting game which produced the added bonus of a 21-19 victory to Brian and Bill Tottey finally overcame a difficult opponent 21-20 after another magnificent sporting encounter. Despite an eventual 43 shot win the Vics did not do enough to gain the aggregate point after last week’s match at Tixall and the malaise that is haunting the Vics afternoon teams in away matches is telling in the points table. The “C” team have no game next week after their preliminary round Shield defeat a fortnight ago.

Hi Fives for “Crusher”, “Dapper” and “Shergar” as Vics go top of Wallasey League.

“Crusher” Karl Sherbrooke, finally turning in a true crushing performance as predicted by this reporter last week, “Dapper” John Devlin and “Shergar” Neil Sherbrooke all produced easy 21-05 winning scorecards for the Vics Wallasey League side at Central Park on Thursday night, as the Vics defeated a gallant Liscard by 129 shots and went to the top of the Division One table. “Lean Machine” Lloyd and “Professor” Atkinson were both at it again, with convincing 21-09 victories and there were a couple of 21-10 wins for Robby Franklin and Dave Gilmore. Matty Gilmore, was outdone by his Dad by only managing a 21-11 winning card and Eddie Clayburn’s first Wallasey appearance of the season brought him a comfortable 21-13 win. Jamie Fitzpatrick was involved in a tighter game before finally coming out on top 21-15 and Brian Leonard’s debut for the Vics Wallasey side, took him back to his former club and a difficult game against young Lee Abbott. Brian finally came out on top 21-16 in a match he couldn’t afford to lose in front of the critical Liscard members. Skipper Mally Johnson, was the only Vics loser on the night, after being forced into playing because of a late cry off. Mally found himself 15-02 up against Eric Parkinson, before the wily old Eric managed to trap him into playing out of the famous Central Park “bombhole”. Eric piled on the score to finally put Mally on the end of a 17-21 losing scorecard amid much delight for the Liscard players and supporters. Next up for the Vics is a Harold Jones Cup match against Liscard at Great Float on Tuesday with the Vics having to concede 60 shots to their opponents.

Aggregate point for “A” team despite defeat at Tixall.

The afternoon “A” team travelled to Tixall on Thursday and despite going down by 21 shots, they did enough to gain the aggregate point after last week’s home victory at West Kirby. Skipper, Billy Atkinson unusually playing in the front four, led the team off in fine style with a good 21-10 winning display which was closely followed by a convincing 21-11 win for Andrew Stratton. Eddie Clayburn had a really tough match against Paul Williams before finally coming out on top 21-18 and Bernie Owen, despite appearing to flag a little at the end again, had done enough to win his game 21-19. Bernie deciding that corner to corner was the way to win his match, must get in some regular fitness work to go with his more than regular eating habits or he will have to concentrate on shorter marks than he was playing in this match. With all the Vics players reaching double figures, Dick Peake’s 19-21 the best of the losers, enough points had been gained for the Vics to gain the aggregate point. As with the other Vics afternoon teams, the “A” team are still awaiting their first away win in the League. Next up, the “A” team have to concede 50 shots to R.N.A. “B” in the Shield on Wednesday at Heswall RBL.

Ian, Ernie and Brian set “B” team on way to easy 71 shot defeat of R.N.A., despite poor state of Vics green.

Ian Cameron 21-03, Ernie Peers 21-05 and Brian Ibbotson 21-07 all produced excellent displays in easy victories for the Vics afternoon “B” team against R.N.A. on Wednesday afternoon despite the poor state of the Vics green at Ashton Park. I can’t remember seeing the Vics green in such a bad condition in the 15 years I have been associated with the club. With bare patches, squirrel damage, divots in places and even worse a very heavy bumpy playing surface, something we don’t normally associate with the usually immaculate and true running Vics green, Wirral Council’s lack of funding for green maintainence, is finally catching up with those of us fortunate to have played at West Kirby. One of the benefits of being a Vics member is the brilliant green we have but unfortunately it looks as if we are about to join the ranks of Council Parks greens being allowed to go to ruin because of the lack of funding. Back to Wednesday’s match, Keith Etches continued with his 100% record this season, with another fine display in a 21-10 victory and C.K.Pau posted a comfortable 21-14 winning scorecard. Despite his frustration with the green, Peter Dodd still pulled off a fine if not easy 21-16 win and Don Ibbotson returned to winning form with a close 21-18 victory. Skipper, Derek Thomas was involved in a titanic struggle before finally coming out on top 21-20 and with Dave Bosworth and Dave Leonard (playing his first ever competitive match on the Vics green) both only just losing out 19-21, the Vics had produced another convincing home victory, this time by 71 shots. After sifting through the individual performances it is still a mystery as to why we just do not seem to be able to play away from home with the same confidence shown at the Vics, we are, after all, playing against the same players. Next up for the “B” team is a Shield match against Birkenhead Park at Pensby on Wednesday.
