Vics gallop halted by League Champions, Gladstone. Only four home winners in poor display.

The Vics Birkenhead League side’s gallop at the top of Division One came to a halt last night, as League Champions Gladstone tamed them with a 40 shot hiding at West Kirby. On a sunny but cool evening at Ashton Park, the Vics were full of confidence at the outset after 4 straight League victories but the tone for the evening was set when the Vics trailed by 7 shots after the first four blocks. Trevor Rodgers, once he had removed his rediculous earpiece, settled down to produce his best display of the season with a 21-18 victory over Mick Andrews. “Crusher” was in top form with commanding 21-15 win to maintain his 100% record in the League so far this season. Karl Sherbrooke is certainly back to something like his best form and I fully expect someone to be crushed underfoot soon in terms of a big winning scorecard for Karl. “Brutal” Brian was at it again with a magnifcent 21-10 hammering of Brian Hanlon and he has taken like a duck to water on the tricky Vics green since his recent signing for the club. Hopefully Brian will be telling Dad, Dave Leonard, just where to bowl on this green in time for Dave’s next outing for the afternoon “B” team on Wednesday. With 3 losers in the middle four, the Vics, despite Brian Leonard’s heroics were down by 13 after eight blocks. Neil Sherbrooke 18-21 and Colin Saville, who managed to growl his way to a tough 20-21 losing scorecard did their best for the Vics but a single figure loss by Mally Johnson did not help the Vics cause. When Billy Atkinson produced an excellent 21-16 winning card in the back four, to put himself at the top of the averages, the Gladstone lead had been cut to just 8 shots but unfortunately the last three blocks conceded 32 shots between them, with the unlucky Craig Burbeneaux completing a miserable two nights at the West Kirby green with a second single figure defeat on the trot. Full credit must be given to Gladstone who were well up to the task of inflicting a heavy defeat on the Vics and damage limitation seems to be the only course open to the lads next week in the return at Birkenhead.
