Night of drama and sportsmanship as Vics defeat Queens Royal 10-06.

The Vics Wallasey League side produced a fine performance to defeat their main rivals Queens Royal 10-06 at Ashton Park last night. In a dramatic evening’s bowling at West Kirby the Vics had eight winners to four against a Queens Royal side fired up with the intent of beating the Vics in the League for the first time in 4 years. It was not to be however for Royal as Robby Hall set the ball rolling for the Vics with a tremendous 21-10 victory over Ian Hazlehurst. Robby Franklin followed up with a hard fought encounter against Chris Barton with Robby coming out on top 21-18. Robby Fitzpatrick lost out 19-21 in another tremendous tussle with Les Henderson and Neil Sherbrooke suffered a rare defeat but only just, 20-21 in a magnificent game against Mark Lynch. Dave Gilmore 21-17 and Steve Nugent 21-17 provided fresh impetus for the Vics with hard earned wins against Eddie Dutton and Colin Saville respectively and Karl Sherbrooke pulled the cat out of the bag in his tremendously exciting 21-20 victory over Steve Scott, Steve sportingly applauding Karl’s winning wood at the end in keeping with the spirit this eagerly awaited match was played in. Unfortunately Craig Burbenneaux picked the wrong night to have one of his least effective games in a one sided affair against Paul Saville that Paul won 21-09. John Lloyd gave a commanding performance in a 21-14 defeat of Geoff Lynch which was quickly followed by Matty Gilmore’s 21-12 defeat of Craig Saville to confirm victory for the Vics even though Billy Atkinson struggled in a 15-21 defeat against Frank O’Neill. The drama had not finished however as the last game of the night saw a stunning end to a magnificent night all round when Jamie Fitzpatrick took advantage of 2 loose woods by Mick Andrews to eventually take a thrilling game 21-20 and confirm the Vics 10-06 points winning display and a 231-212 overall scoreline. The Wallasey Association will be hoping the commitment and skill shown by all the players last night can be carried forward to the County side for the forthcoming British Parks Division Two campaign.

Away curse hits Vics again, this time “C” team lose by 58 at Tixall “B”

The Vics afternoon “C” team followed the trend set this season by all three afternoon teams, when they travelled to Tixall “B” and came away with a 58 shot defeat. Tixall’s green is not the easiest to play but with 3 single figure losses totalling up to 55 of the 58 shot defeat, the Vics were always on the back foot on another gloriously sunny afternoon. Bernie Davies 15-21, C.K.Pau 17-21 and Bill Tottey, unlucky to lose out 20-21, all performed admirably in defeat but it was left to Bill Spraggett 21-17, Harry Preston 21-19 and Bill Purcell, who in winning 21-12 made light of the green conditions which suited his cultured style of play, the more difficult the better or so it seems. I fully expect Bill to produce this type of display on a regular basis back in the “B” team after his short break next week and if he doesn’t he had better read the reports with interest. It was good to see both Bill Spraggett and Harry Preston turn in winning performances away from home, but all the afternoon players right throughout the club must look to improve their performance level away from the haven of Ashton Park or we will not reach the positions in the Leagues that we should expect from the quality of players we have. The Vics have a difficult task to pull back the 58 shots next week but it would not surprise me if they did so and if they do, Skipper Brian Buck will be even more frustrated with the lack of away winners.
