Middle four shine in the sun, for Vics “A” team in 54 shot victory over Tixall.

The Vics afternoon “A” team beat Tixall by 54 shots at West Kirby this afternoon in a Division One fixture played on a fast green in glorious sunshine. It was the turn of the Vics middle four to shine today with a gain of 38 shots between them for the side. As usual, on a fast green, Robby Franklin had set the Vics on their way with a huge 21-08 victory, form that continues to impress the normal ordinary bowler trying his best to conquer the vagaries of the Vics green. Mally Johnson posted his first League win of the season with a fine 21-14 display and Dick Peake just lost out after a tough tussle, 19-21. The unusual factor from the first four today was a below par performance from Eddie Clayburn, who could just not quite get the pace of the green in a rare defeat for him at home. The “Welsh Wizard” had his cap on today, with Elwyn Williams blazing his way to a 21-09 victory and Club Secretary and Webmaster, Peter Dodd proved his value to the club on the green as well as his administration duties, with an emphatic 21-11 win. Ken Palin produced something like his best form with an excellent 21-13 winning display and Andrew Stratton confirmed the middle four superiority with an equally impressive 21-13 winning card. “Hopalong” Bernie Owen, resembling somebody from a geriatrics ward, with his sudden bout of gout, still managed to crawl acrcoss the winning line with a good 21-14 win despite being 06 -13 down at one time and being threatened with a needle in the big toe by the Secretary. Skipper Billy Atkinson, obviously feeling he had to go along the same way as Bernie, found himself in even deeper trouble being 13-20 down but worried about having to face the wrath of his team mates, pulled himself together to manage a fine 21-20 victory and see the Vics through to an eventual 54 shot win to take away next week.
