“Rampant” Robby fails to save Vics “A” team from 25 shot loss.

The Vics afternoon “A” team travelled to Oxton this afternoon trying to improve on last weeks narrow 4 shot home win. With only 3 winners on the day however, the Vics succumbed by 25 shots to not only lose the match but also the vital aggregate point as well. “Rampant” Robby Franklin was at it again today with a tremendous 21-11 win that made a mockery of his somewhat patchy form on this particular green in the past. With his super silky delivery, Robby found the pace of the green straight away and hardly gave his opponent any leeway in a great display. Don’t worry folks, he will pay me for the praise at a later date by going to watch Danny Harrison perform for Rovers. Eddie Clayburn started off like a house on fire in his game but eventually had to settle for another 21-17 win to follow last weeks identical scorecard. The only other winner for the Vics was Skipper, Billy Atkinson who, even though he might not think so, entertained the watching spectators with some tremendous ends against Roy McGunigall in a 21-16 win. We were all watching Bill but felt you were always in control and that Bernie Owen needed the vocal encouragement a bit more during his tough 18-21 loss to Alan Jones. Peter Dodd also lost 18-21 in his game against Kevin Costall but with 16-21 being the next best from both Mally Johnson and Andrew Stratton, the Vics were never seriously in the hunt on a green that has improved 100% from last year. Losing the aggregate point was a disappointment and the Vics need to bounce back against Bromborough Pool at Royden Hall in the Centenary Shield next week.

C.K. cleans up in “B” team whitewash of Marine Park

The Vics afternoon “B” team had all ten winners today in a massive 81 shot victory over Marine Park on another sunny day at West Kirby. In a completely one sided affair, on a slick and much improved green from last week, C.K.Pau proved to be the star of the show with a 21-10 win that was just enough to take the sweep from Ian Cameron, who had bounced back to form with a 21-11 victory. Not one to rest on his laurels, C.K. then proceeded to win the scratch card as well, why does he want to move house? There were a quadruple of 21-12 winners for the Vics, Bill Purcell proving what we knew all along, there is a top class bowler hiding just under the surface waiting for the right green to display his skills and now he is playing on one, the pressure for him to perform under the writers scrutiny will be his biggest problem. Harry Preston, Derek Thomas and Keith Etches, making hay whilst Peter Dodd had been drafted into the “A” side, were the other 21-12 winners and all appreciated the improved bowling surface from last week. The two Ibbotson’s, Brian and Don both came off comfortable 21-13 winners and Club President, Dave Bosworth continued his winning start to the season with a 21-14 victory. Ernie Peers must have wondered what had hit him when he was involved in a marathon 21-20 win over Billy Dulson and I think Ernie will be having a word with Derek Thomas about the draw at the start of the next league match. All in all an excellent day for the “B” team, just a pity about the tiny two shot loss last week. There is Centenary Shield action for the side against Albany “B” at Greasby next Wednesday.
