“A” team open season with narrow 4 shot home win.

The Vics afternoon “A” team entertained Oxton Conservatives at a sunny Ashton Park yesterday and started off the season with a tantalisingly close 4 shot victory. With 4 tight games in the first four blocks, the Vics led by 11 shots depite having 3 winners in the four. Dick Peake had an excellent match with Steve Cliffe, which went in favour of Dick 21-18. “Rampant” Robby Franklin had to settle for a more sedate victory than usual but still came out on top 21-16. Eddie Clayburn, fresh from his heroics in the Merseyside Merit last Sunday, where he reached the Final and qualified for the all England Championships later in the year, had a difficult 21-17 victory and Mally Johnson just couldn’t quite hold onto the sizeable lead he had at one stage, eventually going down 20-21. Elwyn Williams proved to be the only Vics winner in the middle four, winning the sweep with a comfortable 21-14 victory. This meant that the last 2 on the green, Skipper Billy Atkinson and Bernie “the Bolt” Owen had to pull back 4 shots to ensure the Vics didn’t get off to a losing start to the season. Billy triumphed 21-18 in a fine game with Roy McGunigall and Bernie bounced back to somewhere near his best form of a few years back with a crucial 21-16 win over A.M.Jones to ensure an eventual 4 shot victory for the Vics. The green at Ashton Park was faster than the previous few days and maybe caught our new players out after their practise sessions during the week but this was a good win against a fine Oxton side and another close encounter is anticipated in the return next week.
