Sun, sea, split trousers, green like the Himalaya’s, 2 shot defeat, bowls bounces back into full swing !!

The Vics afternoon “B” team travelled to Marine Park this afternoon for their opening League match of the season but after a valiant performance, went down by two shots to their hosts. The Vics had some new faces in the team on a warm, sunny afternoon beside the seaside at New Brighton but the overiding factor of the day was the state of the once excellent Marine Park No. 1 green. In line with most of the Council owned greens over the last few seasons, today’s green was bare and very bumpy. Bowling was not easy and at times resembled the Ten Pin bowling that takes place just along the promenade. The main concern was to actually reach the block with numerous woods falling well short after their mountainous journey from mat to jack. Dave Bosworth 21-12 and Ernie Peers 21-14 combined to keep the score down to just a six shot deficit after the first four blocks with both Dave and Ernie playing some excellent woods to do so. Unfortunately only Skipper Derek Thomas 21-17 bowling well again, managed a win in the middle four and despite all the Vics bowlers reaching double figures on the day, numbers 9 and 10 , Keith Etches and Peter Dodd were left to pull back a 28 shot deficit if the Vics were to start with a win. Despite both Keith and Peter producing excellent displays, to both triumph 21-08, the Vics fell just two shots shy at the end of an eventful days bowling. Peter Dodd even tried to send the female supporters home happy by splitting his trousers on the second end but as is usual in his case other attractions seemed to catch their eye, ships going out to sea, pretty flowers in the spring sunshine, pigeons flying overhead anything but the flash of prime muscle on show on the green.
All in all not a bad afternoon for the Vics with both newcomers Dave Leonard and Bill Purcell showing in flashes, there we go again, that they will be an assett to the club once the season gets into full swing. The Vics will be anticipating gaining the aggregate point in the return fixture at Ashton Park next Wednesday.
