The Vics “A” team stride on in Five A Side Cup with a 23 shot win against Queens Royal “A”.

The Vics Wallasey League “A” team defeated close rivals Queens Royal “A” 95-72 to progress to the last 16 of the Five A Side cup, a competition they won last season. Robby Fitzpatrick, Matt Gilmore, Dave Gilmore, Robby Hall and Anthony Thompson easily dismissed their opponents to send out an early warning that the Vics Skipper Mally Johnson intends to keep his hands on the League title this year despite their close challengers recruiting new players during the winter. The Vics will play Queens Royal “D” at Manor Road tonight in the last 16 with play starting at 6-15pm. The winners will play either Burton’s “A” or Queens Royal “C” in the quarter finals.

Skipper leads “A” team to tremendous away win against League Champions.

Skipper, Billy Atkinson proudly led his afternoon “A” team to an excellent win away to the current League Champions, Manor Road yesterday. After last weeks closely fought 11 shot win at the Vics, Manor Road must have had thoughts of an easy home victory and an expected 3 points and indeed after the first four blocks came off, Manor Road were ahead by 16 shots. Andrew Stratton continued his fine start to the season with a fine 21-16 win and Robby Franklin won a tough encounter 21-20 but with 2 winners and 2 losers from the 1st four, the Vics needed a good middle four to have any chance of victory. With 3 excellent scorecards posted, this proved to be the turning point. Elwyn Williams, bowling as well as he ever has, waltzed to an easy 21-09 win and Eddie Clayburn turned in an equally emphatic 21-10 scorecard. Dick Peake in winning 21-11 completed a hat trick of impressive winners for the Vics in the space of about ten minutes to send the Vics into a 12 shot lead with 2 blocks left. Billy Atkinson decided to leave nothing to chance with a demolition display of bowling, by winning 21-03 and sealing a wonderful 16 shot overall victory for the Vics and 5 points from 2 matches. Next up for the Vics is a Shield match against Birkenhead Park before the League resumes with a fixture against Upton Victory Hall. Skipper Billy Atkinson will be hoping that his “Last of The Summer Wine” trio of Bernie Owen, Peter Dodd and Mally Johnson will be able to post winning cards sooner rather than later after disappointing starts for them so far.

Huge 70 shot win not enough to gain extra point for “B” team.

Derek Thomas could not have asked much more from his team yesterday as they demolished R.N.A. by 70 shots at the Vics but it was just not enough for the aggregate point because of last weeks disappointing reverse at Birkenhead. The response to last weeks defeat was an emphatic display with 8 winners on the day. Club Chairman, Dave Bosworth bounced back in style from his single figure loss to record an excellent 21-06 victory. This was followed by a Captain’s performance from Derek Thomas in an equally impressive 21-07 win. Harry Preston was next best with a comfortable 21-10 win and both Ian Cameron and Keith Etches recorded 21-11 victories, with Keith taking an early season lead at the top of the averages following his win last week. Don Ibbotson and Paul Lomax posted 21-14 wins with Paul joining Keith by winning both his matches so far. Brian Ibbotson had a hard fought 21-18 victory to make up in some way for his surprising scoreline from last week. C.K.Pau and Ernie Peers both missed out this week with Ernie going down 20 -21 in a tremendous tussle but both will no doubt hit form very soon to record their 1st wins. All in all, an excellent performance from the side which augurs well for the rest of the season.
