5 winners 5 losers but Vics take extra point despite 8 shot loss at Upton.

The afternoon “B” team had 5 winners at Upton but could not pull off that elusive away victory, eventually going down by 8 shots. This was enough to take the extra point however in what was a much improved away display by the Vics. Harry Preston was the pick of the Vics bowlers with a good 21-11 win and he was closely followed by Dave Bosworth and Keith Etches, who both won 21-12. Ian Cameron and C.K.Pau were the other two Vics winners with both winning 21-15. With all ten players in double figures this was a more consistent display by the Vics and hopefully they can get that vital away win in the last fixture against Hoylake Central.

Brian’s six hit sets up Vics for 53 shot home win.

Brian Ibbotson produced a convincing 21-06 winning display to set the afternoon “B” team on the way to a 53 shot home win against Upton Victory Hall. Club Chairman, Dave Bosworth followed him in with an excellent 21-09 victory to prove his value to the club is not only on the administration front. C.K.Pau, Derek Thomas and Ian Cameron all bowled well to record 21-12 wins and Harry Preston came in with a 21-14 winning scorecard. Ernie Peers stayed at the top of the averages with a 21-16 win and Paul Lomax survived a tough encounter to pull off a 21-20 victory. This was a more convincing performance from the Vics and confidence will be high for the return at Upton.

Only 3 winners for “B” team but enough to take extra point.

The afternoon “B” team only had 3 winners on the tricky Port Sunlight Village green but in only losing by 29 shots they easily collected the extra point thanks to last weeks home win. Derek Thomas was the star turn for the Vics with an emphatic 21-01 win on this notoriously difficult green. Tony Ryding, in yet another rare appearance, again won, this time 21-13. Get another job next year please Tony!!! Brian Ibbotson was the only other Vics winner on the day with a hard and tough 21-18 victory. Keith Etches and Harry Preston were next best for the Vics with 16-21 and 18-21 scorecards respectively. Better things will be expected from the Vics in the next 2 fixtures against Upton Victory Hall.

“C” team finish season with 36 shot loss at Bromborough Pool.

The afternoon “C” team finished their season with a disappointing 36 shot away loss at Bromborough Pool despite putting in a better performance than in the home fixture. Stan Evans completed a fine season for himself with a good 21-11 win and Bill Spraggett made it 4 wins on the trot for him, with a good 21-15 victory. Bill Tottey, with the benefit of an expert marker, came from 09-16 down to finally win 21-18 in a tight game but the performance of the day came from John Davies with his hard fought 21-18 victory. John is another who has suffered from illness during the season and this was a fine reward for his support for the team even when not playing. Andy Fergus was involved in a tremendous game before finally losing out 20-21. Overall this has been a fine season for the “C” team after promotion to a higher division. They have had to put up with the “B” team taking players on a regular basis and Eric Neal has had to work wonders to field a side on occasions when the “A” and “B” teams have been short through holidays and illness. A mid table position has to be considered as a good season and hopefully next year a more settled side can aim at promotion again.

Rare home defeat sees “C” team lose by 1 shot against Bromborough Pool.

The Vics “C” team suffered a rare home defeat against Bromborough Pool “C”, going down by 1 shot despite the brilliant performance by Tony Ryding in his 21-03 victory. Tony has been sorely missed by the club this season because of his work committments and this display only leaves us wondering what might have been if he had been available on a regular basis. Reg Armitage gave one of his best displays with a fine 21-07 win and Andy Fergus had a welcome 21-15 win to give him some confidence after a difficult season. With all the work Andy does at the club I think some people forget that he is still here to play bowls and he has given his all in every match despite having a difficult time result wise. Bill Spraggett was the only other Vics winner on the day, winning a very tough game 21-20. With only 4 home winners this was a disastrous way for the Vics to complete their home fixtures for the season and hopefully they can produce a better performance in the away tie to at least push Pool hard for the extra point.

What a difference a week makes as “C” team lose by 94 shots at RNA.

After last week’s 104 shot home win, the Vics afternoon “C” team travelled to Birkenhead with high hopes of a rare away victory. This was not to be however, as with only one winner on the day the Vics were lucky in the end to claim the aggregate point by a 10 shot margin. Bill Spraggett was the hero of the day for the Vics with a crucial 21-11 win on the difficult RNA green and with Bernard Davies next best with his 14-21 scorecard the Vics were indeed grateful to Bill’s efforts. This was a poor performance on a really tricky green and is a setback to the team after two good home performances recently.

Nine winners see “C” team sink RNA by 104 shots.

The afternoon “C” team produced their best performance of the season to beat the RNA by 104 shots at West Kirby. Bill Tottey, not letting Everton’s woes get him down, turned in a brilliant showing in a magnificent 21-01 winning display. Bill Spraggett came in with a brilliant 21-02 victory and then had the unfortunate honour of having to mark Bill Tottey’s card and see his sweep disappear. Eddie Dodd, another unfortunate Evertonian, gave a vintage display with a flowing 21-04 win and Chris Williams continued his fine season with another convincing 21-08 victory. Reg Armitage, Bernard Davies and Bill Powell all gave fine 21-12 winning performances and Stan Evans and Brian Buck both did well in their 21-15 wins. This performance must surely give the Vics hope of an away win at RNA in the return fixture.

48 shot win for “C” team not enough as aggregate point is lost by 1 shot.

The afternoon “C” team put in decent enough performance at home to the Magazine Hotel but in winning by 48 shots they fell short of the aggregate point by 1 shot. Chris Williams, although feeling a little unwell, produced a magnificent whitewash of his opponent in a 21-00 win, to push himself well clear at the top of the averages. Bill Tottey, in a welcome return to form, had a tremendous 21-09 victory, that was closely followed by a pair of 21-10 wins for C.K.Pau and Brian Buck. Brian is slowly getting back to his previous known form and if he continues this type of display, his only worries will concern the inept performances of his favoured Everton team. Bill Powell produced a fine 21-12 win and Stan Evans came up trumps again with a good 21-14 victory. John Dodd fought hard before eventually losing out 20-21. This was a fine display by the “C” team despite the loss of the extra point.
