Keith and Billy push Vics to 2 shot Centenary Cup triumph over Heswall “B”
24/09/2005 by admin.
The Vics afternoon “A” team won the Centenary Cup for the first time, when they overcame a 45 shot handicap to beat Heswall RBL “B” by 2 shots at Pensby. Keith Etches was the star of the show for the Vics with an excellent and as it turned out, much needed, 21-06 victory. Skipper Billy Atkinson was not far behind with an equally good 21-09 win. Bernie Owen came off with a fine 21-12 winning card with Bob Jones winning 21-13. Robby Franklin and Peter Walker both had 21-18 wins and Elwyn Williams won another close game 21-19. Andrew Stratton had to dig deep to pull off a narrow 21-20 victory and it needed both Ernie Peers and Brian Ibbotson’s 18-21 cards to keep the Vics noses in front at the end of the day. This was a hard fought win for the Vics despite having 8 winners on the day and understandably skipper Billy Atkinson was delighted to collect the trophy in his first season as captain.

“A” team finish season with a win but lose extra point.
24/09/2005 by admin.
The afternoon “A” team finally managed to beat Oxton “A” on Wednesday, with a narrow 15 shot win that was not enough for the aggregate point. With only 4 home winning cards on the day, it needed a remarkable 21-03 winning performance by skipper Billy Atkinson to see the Vics home to victory. When Robby Franklin came off with an early 21-06 win there was no hint of the difficulty to come for the Vics but with Bernie Owen 21-11 and Elwyn Williams 21-19 the only other 2 Vics winners this game went right down to the wire. Bob Jones 18-21 and Andrew Stratton and Dick Peake both 19-21 along with Keith Etches 20-21 just did enough for the Vics to eventually run out narrow winners at the end. After such a good start to the season skipper Billy Atkinson will be slightly disappointed the Vics could not win a few more away games to enable the team to push the top two in the league. Thanks must go to Peter Walker for providing an excellent spread for the teams at the end of the match.

Only 1 winner in big loss for “A” team at Oxton.
24/09/2005 by admin.
The afternoon “A” team turned in a bad performance in a big 68 shot loss at Oxton Conservative “A” last week, with only one winner on the day. Skipper Billy Atkinson virtually clinched the averages when he ran out the only Vics winner on the day, with a 21-14 winning card. Keith Etches 18-21 and Dick Peake 19-21 were the only two other Vics bowlers to really push their opposition in a disappointing overall display by the Vics. It will be difficult to gain the extra point against Oxton in the final match of the season at home next week.

Aggregate point for “A” team in 39 shot home win.
24/09/2005 by admin.
The afternoon “A” team collected the extra point from Higher Tranmere “B” when they had a 39 shot home win against their opponents. With a side containing 4 players not on skipper Billy Atkinson’s original starred list for the season, the Vics were never in danger of losing but the winning margin was closer than expected. Bob Jones had an excellent 21-04 win to prove yet again his value to the club after joining a few weeks after the season had started. Robby Franklin and Andrew Stratton also found the green to their liking with excellent 21-05 and 21-06 wins respectively. Bernie Owen had to fight hard to eventually run out a 21-17 winner and there were tough winning games also for Peter Walker 21-18 and Elwyn Williams 21-19. Brian Ibbotson and Ernie Peers both performed well after moving up from the “B” team before both went down 19-21.

Only 3 winners in surprise 12 shot defeat for “A” team at Higher Tranmere “B”.
24/09/2005 by admin.
The afternoon “A” team suffered a surprise 12 shot loss at Higher Tranmere “B” on a fast and tricky Tranmere green. After having won the away fixture against Higher Tranmere “A” earlier in the season, skipper Billy Atkinson was confident of pulling off another away win for his side but with only 3 winners on the day this was not to be. Robby Franklin had a terrific 21-09 win on a green ideally suited to his style of play and Billy Atkinson came in with a convincing 21-11 win despite having a moan at some of his supporters on the sidelines. I do think Billy should concentrate on his game rather than be shouting at people who come to support the team. Eddie Clayburn was the only other Vics winner on the day, coping well with the speed of the difficult green to post a 21-14 winning card. Andrew Stratton and Bernie Owen with 18-21 cards were the best of the rest on a disappointing day for the Vics.

Away victory at last for “B” team at Hoylake.
24/09/2005 by admin.
The afternoon “B” team finally managed an away victory when they defeated Hoylake Central by 48 shots on a heavy Central green. Skipper Don Ibbotson was delighted to finally get maximum points from his opponents for the first time in what has been a difficult season selection wise with the “A” team calling on many of his players during the year. Chris Williams proved yet again that he can operate at this level as well as with the “C” team, when he came in with an easy 21-09 victory. C.K.Pau bounced back from last weeks surprise home defeat to end the season in style with a fine 21-12 win. Paul Lomax had a good 21-13 win to confirm his consistent season and Derek Thomas ended his season with another good display, winning 21-16. Ernie Peers surprisingly went down 18-21 but had done enough to win the averages after an excellent season. The “B” team finished the season with 30 points, the same as last year, which was a good performance after having to supply the “A” team with players on a regular basis.

Chairman and Chairman elect combine to crush Central.
24/09/2005 by admin.
Club Chairman Dave Bosworth and his heir apparant, Brian Buck, combined to help the afternoon “B” team crush Hoylake Central at West Kirby last Wednesday. Dave had an excellent 21-03 win followed by Brian’s similarly emphatic 21-04 victory. Both Dave and Brian have been showing much improved form over the past few weeks and these two games proved that fact. The “B” team crushed Central by 71 shots in an easy victory with Chris Williams 21-05 and Harry Preston 21-09 also having easy single figure victories. Ian Cameron and Lawrie Blackburn both won 21-12 with Ian winning his third game on the trot after a mixed season for him. There were a couple of 21-16 wins for Keith Etches and Paul Lomax in a victory for the Vics which gives them confidence for their final fixture away at Central.

5 winners 5 losers but Vics take extra point despite 8 shot loss at Upton.
24/09/2005 by admin.
The afternoon “B” team had 5 winners at Upton but could not pull off that elusive away victory, eventually going down by 8 shots. This was enough to take the extra point however in what was a much improved away display by the Vics. Harry Preston was the pick of the Vics bowlers with a good 21-11 win and he was closely followed by Dave Bosworth and Keith Etches, who both won 21-12. Ian Cameron and C.K.Pau were the other two Vics winners with both winning 21-15. With all ten players in double figures this was a more consistent display by the Vics and hopefully they can get that vital away win in the last fixture against Hoylake Central.
