Vics defeated in Semi Final for 2nd time this season, despite having 6 winners on the night.

The Vics Wallasey League side came unstuck again last night, in their Presidents Cup semi final against arch rivals Queens Royal. After losing to Royal in the Harold Jones semi final last month, the Vics were desperate for revenge but were soon behind after 3 losing cards in the first 4. Only Ian Sherbrooke managed a win with a close 21-18 victory. 18 down after the first 4 blocks the Vics needed to have a big middle 4 performance to get back on track but with 2 winners and 2 losers the Vics actually lost further ground and were 27 down going into the back 4. Neil Sherbrooke struggled to a 21-19 win and Robby Franklin bowled well to win 21-12 but a 07-21 and 15-21 card saw the Vics needing big performances from their star players in the back 4 to have any chance of victory. Matty Gilmore proved his undoubted class, with a tremendous 21-05 win and with both Robby Fitzpatrick and Robby Hall holding substantial leads hopes were high for an eventual win. Robby Fitzpatrick, who won 21-16 and Robby Hall in winning 21-19, both did their best but with another losing 14-21 card for the Vics, it was Queens Royal who progressed into the final to be played on August 20th. Skipper Mally Johnson understandably upset at losing this semi final to Royal is looking to strengthen his squad for next season when hopefully the Vics will be fielding a second side in the Wallasey League. With Queens Royal having reached 2 Finals at the expense of the Vics this season Mally is determined that he will come up with the squad needed to counteract this Queens Royal side. The crunch match of the season takes place at Queens Royal next Thursday 11th August when the Vics are defending a 62 shot advantage in the title decider.

Vics go down away from home again, in 23 shot loss at Albany.

The Vics Birkenhead League side lost by 23 shots at Albany on Monday night, to continue their dismal run of away form. Playing one of the sides below them in the table the Vics had high hopes of actually coming away with a win at the immaculate Albany set up in Birkenhead. Even with 6 winners on the night the Vics could not quite do enough to get the better of the Albany side. Skipper Ian Sherbrooke did his best to inspire the Vics, with a fine 21-10 win and Mally Johnson continued his tremendous recent run, winning 21-13. The fact that we had three 21-18 winners in Trevor Rodgers, Colin Saville and Billy Atkinson and a 21-19 winner in Neil Sherbrooke meant that our losing cards were much greater than the Albany losers and consequently another defeat was the outcome. We will hopefully pull the 23 shots back in the home tie on Friday but it is obvious that we need to attract some more players if we are to be competitive away from home in this league next season. Whilst we can win most of our home games, it is the away form that is letting us down and stronger players are required to make any sort of challenge on the top four teams.
