Mally’s “fears” unwarranted as Vics 11 winners give them 115 shot win.

Skipper Mally Johnson, worried that his Wallasey league side might struggle without 4 of his star players, was made to luck a bit foolish last night when the Vics had 11 winners against Sacred Heart to win by 115 shots. With the newly crowned Wirral Merit and Tixall Classic winner, Matty Gilmore, his dad Dave and Anthony Thompson and Robby Fitzpatrick all unavailable for selection this match was a chance for the rest of the squad to prove Mally should have more faith in his players. The Sherbrooke trio of Neil 21-03, Karl 21-05 and Ian 21-09 proved once again they are a top family of bowlers and set the Vics well on the way to their huge victory. Peter Dodd had his second 21-06 win on the trot and Robby Franklin won 21-08. There were a couple of 21-12 wins for Billy Atkinson and Trevor Rodgers and Bernie Owen won 21-13. Eddie Clayburn completed a 21-14 victory and Elwyn Williams, making a welcome return to Wallasey bowls for the Vics, won 21-15. Mally Johnson won 21-15 and with C.K.Pau again performing well, before losing 17-21 in a good game with Lynsey Gorman, the Vics ran out comfortable 115 shot winners at the end of the night to remain clear at the top of the league.

“A” team in good 28 shot home win over Harrison Park.

Skipper Billy Atkinson once again led from the front in steering his afternoon “A” team to a good 28 shot home win against a strong Harrison Park outfit yesterday. This win keeps the Vics unbeaten league run going and consolidates their position at the head of the table. Billy had a crucial 21-07 win, at a time when the 2 teams were neck and neck on the scorecards, to push his team towards victory. Robby Franklin also showed his class when needed, by posting a good 21-10 win. Peter Walker had a tremendous win, 21-13, confirming what a useful aquisition he has been to the club this season. There was a close game for Eddie Clayburn, with Eddie eventually coming out on top 21-17 and the Vics had a trio of 21-19 winners in Bernie Owen, Dick Peake and Mally Johnson. The Vics also had a 14 and two 17 losing cards on the day to confirm what a tough match this was for Billy and his team. 28 shots to the good at the end of the day does give the Vics the chance of the extra point next week but it will be a tough match at Harrison Park.

“B” team go down by 18 shots, despite Reg and Bernie double act.

The Vics afternoon “B” team lost by 18 shots away to Harrison Park “C” on Tuesday despite tremendous displays from Reg Armitage and Bernie Davies, who won to 21-06 and 21-09 respectively. Both of these players are new members this season and they are proving to be more than useful additions to the club. Ernie Peers continued his winning streak with a 21-13 win and there was a good 21-14 victory for Harry Preston. With only 4 winners on the day, the Vics were always up against it but with useful performances from Lawrie Blackburn, Paul Lomax and skipper Don Ibbotson. the Vics managed to keep the deficit down to only 18 shots. With the home game to come next week Don will be anticipating collecting the valuable aggregate point.
