10 Winners and huge 119 shot victory for Vics Birkenhead League Side.
07/05/2005 by admin.
On a wet night at West Kirby yesterday the Vics Birkenhead League side overwhelmed Heswall RBL “B” by 119 shots to complete a double over their opponents and easily gain the aggregate point. Trevor Rodgers, in supremely confident form, ran away with a quickfire 21-03 victory and Skipper Ian Sherbrooke, back after missing 3 games through illness, followed with an equally easy 21-05 win. Bernie Owen and Billy Atkinson raced to 21-06 wins and Robby Franklin had no trouble in triumphing 21-08. Neil Sherbrooke made it six single figure winners on the night for the Vics, winning 21-09. Dick Peake and Colin Saville had fairly comfortable 21-10 victories and George Morgan continues to impress with a 21-11 win. Karl Sherbrooke withstood some good woods from Dave Tinker before he completed a 21-12 win and it was left to Peter Dodd and Mally Johnson to show some compassion to our opponents by doing the honourable thing and losing to 15 and 16 respectively. On a more serious note, George Morgan is going into hospital on Wednesday for an operation and we all wish him a speedy recovery. George has shown tremendous form this season and he will be sorely missed during his absence from the team. Next up, a chance for revenge over Albany in the Rose Bowl on Monday at Upton Victory Hall.

Eddie and Doddy hit a couple of sixes for Vics in away win at Marine Park.
06/05/2005 by admin.
The Vics Wallasey League side, much depleted through illness and holidays, had a good 68 shot win away to Marine Park tonight in a Division One fixture. In anything but cricket weather down on the front at New Brighton, the Vics included a couple of big six hitters, with both Eddie Clayburn and Peter Dodd completing comprehensive 21-06 victories. There were three other single figure winners for the Vics with George Morgan, back to his best, winning 21-08 and both Neil Sherbrooke and Robby Fitzpatrick completing 21-09 wins. Trevor Rodgers was a welcome addition to the team tonight and he had a good 21-12 win, coming back from 0-7 down. “Crusher” won again, 21-16 and Dave Gilmore came out on top after a tough game 21-19. Thanks must go to Bob Jones, making his debut tonight and performing well to only go down 20-21. It was left to skipper Mally Johnson to provide some light relief (or maybe heavy relief) when his trouser belt snapped in two whilst bending to deliver one of his woods. The sight of Mally trying to deliver woods whilst keeping his trousers up was indeed one to relish. I don’t think Mally will be calling anyone “Fatboy” for quite some time now!!

“C” team finding going tough after promotion.
05/05/2005 by admin.
Eric Neal’s Afternoon “C” team struggled at Heswall RBL. “B” yesterday afternoon, going down by 56 shots at the end of the match. With only two winners the Vics are finding away matches a bit tougher in this higher Division. Bob Jones winning 21-16 on his debut for the Vics and Eric Neal with a very tight 21-20 were the only two winners for the Vics but there were some encouraging performances from Eddie Dodd 17-21, C.K.Pau 19-21 and Andy Fergus 19-21 to bolster the Vics hopes of turning the result around when the two teams meet at West Kirby next week. Eric Neal has a difficult job with his team selection with holidays and players unable to play on ceertain days but when he can get his selection settled I am sure that the Vics will more than hold their own in this division.

Afternoon “B” team in tight 5 shot home win against Burton’s.
05/05/2005 by admin.
The Afternoon “B” team beat Burton’s yesterday afternoon in a tight Division 3 match to claim 2 welcome points. With 5 winners apiece, Club Chairman Dave Bosworth’s stunning 21-06 victory was vital to the outcome of the match. Paul Lomax again showing good form also had a good win, 21-10. Brian Ibbotson 21-13, Skipper Don Ibbotson 21-18 and Ian Cameron 21-19 were the other three Vics winners on the day and with Harry Preston 20-21 and Derek Thomas 18-21 involved in close games, the Vics held on for a very close but much needed 5 shot victory.

Vics go out of Sansom Cup after 2 shot loss to Albany.
05/05/2005 by admin.
The Vics Birkenhead League side lost by 2 shots against Albany last night in the Sansom Cup preliminary round. With only five winners the Vics were always struggling to win the match but some close games kept the result in the balance right to the last wood of the match. “Crusher” Sherbrooke, again showing fine form, was the only winner in the front four as the Vics were behind from the off, Karl winning his game 21-13. Trevor Rodgers had a close game going down 19 -21, with both Bob Jones and Colin Saville well into double figures, the Vics trailed by 6 after the first four. Bernie Owen 21-20 was the only winner in the middle four and altough Peter Dodd managed a 19-21 the Vics deficit was increased to 27. Three winners in the back four Robby Franklin 21-14, Mally Johnson 21-13 and acting skipper Neil Sherbrooke 21-10 meant that Billy Atkinson had to win by 2 for the Vics to progress. Unfortunately Billy, in a tight and tense tussle, went down 20-21 to leave the Vics beaten by 2. There is a chance for the Vics to get their revenge on Monday next week, when the same two teams meet in the Rose Bowl at Upton Victory Hall.

Afternoon “A” still unbeaten after tremendous 5 shot away win at Albany.
05/05/2005 by admin.
Billy Atkinson’s afternoon “A” team continued their fine unbeaten start to the season with a close and exciting 5 shot win at Albany yesterday afternoon. Billy led his team in fine style with a tremendous 21-06 win, which was to prove so crucial to the overall score. Andrew Stratton and Eddie Clayburn, both winning 21-18, had started things off for the Vics after both Mally Johnson and Bernie Owen had lost their respective games. Dick Peake with a 21-17 win and Peter Walker, showing fine winning form, with a good 21-10 victory kept the Vics in the match after Elwyn Williams had gone down in a tight individual game 17-21. With Billy Atkinson running away with his game, it was left to George Morgan and Robby Franklin to garner enough points for the win and with George coming out on top 21-20 in a tight tussle, Robby required 13 points to seal victory for the Vics. Robby managed to get to 17-21 to give the Vics another 2 points and a win by 5 shots. The Vics lost this corresponding fixture by 76 shots last year and understandably Skipper Atkinson was delighted with his team’s performance.

Vics start defence of Harold Jones Cup with 11 winners and 115 shot victory.
04/05/2005 by admin.
The Vics Wallasey side triumphed by 115 shots tonight in a preliminary round tie of the Harold Jones Cup competition against Parkfield. The Vics had 5 single figure winners with Billy Atkinson 21-03, Dave Gilmore 21-06, Karl Sherbrooke 21-07, Bernie Owen 21-08 and Peter Dodd 21-09 all running out comfortable victors. Anthony Thompson and Eddie Clayburn followed up with 21-10 wins and Robby Franklin and Neil Sherbrooke won 21-14. There were closer games for Matty Gilmore and Mally Johnson who both came out on top 21-16. Unfortunately, Robby Fitzpatrick, fresh from his heroics in reaching The Waterloo quarter finals, went down in a tight tussle with Parkfield’s Mike Lewis 18-21, never mind Rob, Liverpool won! Next up for the Vics is an away league match at Marine Park on Thursday.

Vics “A” team retain 5-A-Side trophy.
01/05/2005 by admin.
The Vics Wallasey “A” team retained their 5-A-Side trophy tonight after running away with their Semi-Final and Final against Manor Road “B” and “A” teams at the Harrison Park greens. On a warm and sunny evening, Dave and Matty Gilmore eased The Vics into the Final after 21-05 and 21-04 wins in their respective Semi-Final games against Manor Road “B”. Anthony Thompson and Anthony O’Neill also won their games to give The Vics a comfortable passage into the Final again. In the Final against Manor Road “A”, Dave Gilmore again, with a 21-06 win and Robby Fitzpatrick, with a tremendous long distance 21-02 victory, set the Vics up for another comfortable victory. With the two Anthony’s winning again, the only surprise was Matty Gilmore going down in his game 15-21. Matty had the last laugh however as he collected the trophy from League President, Keith Etches.

“Captaincy” suits Neil as Vics win away by 58 shots in Birkenhead League.
01/05/2005 by admin.
With Skipper Ian Sherbrooke ill with food poisoning, it was left to brother Neil to take the reigns in the Birkenhead League fixture away at Heswall Legion “B” last night. Captaincy seemed to suit Neil as he guided his team to a 58 shot win by winning his own game 21-07. With Robby Franklin and Bernie Owen wanting to make a quick getaway to watch Tranmere Rovers, they were in the first four blocks with totally different outcomes to their games. Bernie wore a line down the top edge of the green with a fine performance of “edge bowling” running out a quick and easy 21-03 victor. Robby however decided to treat his team mates to a nervous 50 minutes of bowling, by falling well behind and virtually out of the match at 03-15 down, only to show us he had been getting practice on the green,by eventually taking his game all the way before losing 20-21. George Morgan, unfortunately due to miss some games in the next couple of months because of an operation and stay in hospital, showed what we will miss with a devastating demolition of his opponent in a 21-05 win. Colin Saville with a 21-14 victory, Peter Dodd 21-15, Trevor Rodgers 21-15, Billy Atkinson 21-15 and Mally Johnson 21-17 made it eight winners on the night for The Vics and with Karl Sherbrooke and Dick Peake involved in close games, 58 shots was a welcome win for the ailing Skipper back home in bed. Special mention must go to Eddie Dodd, who turned out for us at short notice to make sure we fielded a full side, getting into double figures in a creditable perfiormance on a quick Heswall green.

Bernie makes sparkling debut but “C” team lose Shield match.
01/05/2005 by admin.
The Vics afternoon “C” team went down to a Centenary Shield preliminary round defeat against Thingwall “B at Bronze on Friday. Bernie Davies marked his debut though, with a comprehensive 21-07 victory, which will hopefully be a sign of things to come from him. With Dave Bosworth, after his exertions the night before for the Wallasey side, winning 21-18, Eddie Dodd winning 21-20 and a welcome win for Alan Flaxen, also 21-20, the Vics did not have enough firepower to trouble Thingwall on the day. Skipper Eric Neal 20-21 was the best of the losers but never mind remember the old saying,” we can concentrate on the League now”.
