Afternoon”C” team win opener after promotion.

Eric Neal’s afternoon “C” team started off the new season in fine style today with a hard fought 18 shot victory over Hoylake Marine at a cold and damp West Kirby green. After winning promotion to division 4, the “C” team continued their unbeaten home run from last season. Chris Williams was the star of the show with a resounding 21-03 victory, closely followed by an equally impressive performance by Eddie Dodd, who ran out a 21-07 winner. Ernie Peers also won impressively to single figures, winning 21-09. C.K.Pau continued the good work with a comfortable 21-11 win and Bill Spraggett completed “The Vics” winners with a close fought 21-17 victory. In dificult cold conditions John Davies, Eric Neal, Andy Fergus, Bill Powell and Arthur Fagan all contributed to the overall victory without actually winning their respective games. This was a good performance by the “C” team in higher company, with the opposition side containing players who played in the 1st division last season. Hopefully with warmer weather on the way and the green a bit slicker, bigger home victories will follow, to set the scene for some vital aggregate points for the “C” team.

“C” team crash at first hurdle.

Our 5-A-Side “C” team took an early tumble from the competition last night when they went down to Sacred Heart “B” by 6 shots. Despite 3 of the 5 cards being winning ones Trevor Rodgers, Bernie Owen and Mally Johnson, the two losing cards, Peter Dodd and Eddie Clayburn, were a handicap too much. Never mind, this was a good run out for the start of the season. Thanks to Dave Bosworth and Billy Atkinson for their support.

Five-A-Side holders start their defence of trophy against League newcomers.

“The Vics” 5-A-side “A” team start their challenge to retain the trophy against league newcomers Greasby at Magazine tonight in the preliminary round. Our “C” team travel to Burton’s to take on Sacred Heart “B” in another preliminary round match. “The Vics” “B” team have a bye through to the first round where they will meet Marine Park “B” at Arrowe Park No.2 green (Grange).

Nine winners give “B” team an impressive 61 shot home victory against Cammell Laird.

Skipper, Don Ibbotson was delighted with his “B” team today as they opened the season with an impressive 61 shot victory over Cammell Laird at home. Paul Lomax made a welcome return to the club with an excellent 21-08 victory. Ian Cameron started the season off in fine style with an equally impressive 21-09 win. Club Chairman, Dave Bosworth and team captain Don Ibbotson, both had good 21-13 wins to start off the season in good form. Harry Preston (21-14) and Laurie Blackburn (21-15) piled on the pressure with steady victories and Keith Etches, making his debut, ran out a 21-16 winner once he managed to get the jack back after falling 07-12 behind. Derek Thomas also won 21-16 and with Ernie Peers having a much closer 21-19 victory “The Vics” eventually completed an excellent 61 shot win. Reg Armitage on his debut, only went down 18-21 and there will be plenty of victories for him once he gets used to our green. All in all a great start for Don and his team.

Star performance by Eddie Clayburn sees Vics “A” team to commanding away win.

New captain, Billy Atkinson, could not have wished for a better start to the season as his Afternoon “A” side stormed to a 33 shot away victory at Higher Tranmere this afternoon. Leading the way, with a magnificent start to his campaign, was Eddie Clayburn, whose long game proved too much for his opponent in a tremendous 21-01 victory. Skipper Atkinson also won to single figures with a resounding 21-07 result. Robbie Franklin continued the good work with a good 21-10 win and Andrew Stratton impressed on debut with a competent 21-14 victory. Possibly the best win of the day belonged to Elwyn Williams, who beat the formidable Roy Lussey 21-17. Completing the winners on the day was Mally Johnson with a welcome 21-20 away victory, hopefully the forerunner to an improved season for him. Bernie Owen, George Morgan, Dick Peake and Peter Walker, also making his debut today, all managed double figures in an excellent start for the “A” team.

Season gets under way with 2 Afternoon League games today.

After what seems like a very long time since our Wallasey Presidents Cup win over Manor Road, the new season gets under way today with 2 matches for our Afternoon “boys”. The “A” team , under new skipper, Billy Atkinson, have a daunting task away to Higher Tranmere “A”. Billy’s team includes newcomer’s Andrew Stratton and Peter Walker and we wish them every success for the coming months. The “B” team, also under new captaincy,Don Ibbotson, start off with a home fixture against Cammell Laird and Don includes newcomers Keith Etches and Reg Armitage in his team. Once again we wish them good luck for the season. Tomorrow night the Wallasey Association 5-A-Side competition swings into action with “The Vics” fielding 3 teams in this event. The “A” team play Greasby at Magazine and the “C” team play Sacred Heart “B” at Burton’s with both matches starting at 6-15pm. The “B” team start on Tuesday (19th) against Marine Park “B” at Grange (Arrowe Park No.2). Welcome to all our new members this season and hopefully we will enjoy another successful season on the green.
