Trevor wins club championship.

Trevor Rodgers became the youngest ever winner of the club championship yesterday when he won the Presidents Cup by beating Tony Ryding in the final 21-12. Trevor bowled consistently well in the final and always had plenty in hand despite Tony failing to give up at any stage. In the earlier semi final Tony beat Billy Atkinson 21-14 with a magnificent display of lead bowls. Billy just could not force his way into the lead at any stage and was constantly trying to find ways past Tony’s 1st wood. Trevor’s opponent in the semi, Peter Walker had to withdraw under doctor’s orders. A good afternoon of bowling in hot sunshine was watched by a decent crowd of members and Don Ibbotson officiated at the prize presentation where club President Sid Dutton presented the trophy to Trevor.

“Shergar” wins at a canter but Vics go down by 25.

Neil “Shergar” Sherbrooke had an excellent 21-04 victory tonight as the Vics Birkenhead League side played the return match with Harrison Park at Wallasey. Shergar will be the subject of an enquiry as to what actually happened at hospital on Tuesday, when he had some treatment to his eyes. Never mind the Jockey Club, Ernie Gartland was not a happy punter!!! Peter Dodd continued his fine run with a good 21-12 victory and Billy Atkinson won 21-15. These however were our only winners of the night as Harrison Park won by 25 shots to reverse Monday’s defeat. The Vics did gain the aggregate point and it was a measure of their consistency that even with nine losers they only went down by 25. Ian Sherbrooke and Colin Saville were the best of the losers with 19 and 17 respectively.

Dave leads Vics to top of table in hunt for 4th consecutive Title.

Dave Gilmore continued to lead from the front last night with a stunning 21-03 victory in the Vics 93 shot away win at Burtons. One of the features of the Vics performances has always been the tremendous starts from the front 4 blocks and yet again last night this proved to be the case. The Vics leading by 38 shots after another clean sweep of the front four. Ian Sherbrooke, taking it easy tonight after his marathon on Tuesday, won 21-07 and with Matty Gilmore 21-16 and Crusher 21-20 involved in tighter games the Vics were well on the way. The middle 4 all produced victories as well, with Robby Fitzpatrick and Neil Sherbrooke both 21-10 and Anthony Thompson 21-11 all comfortable winners it was left to Peter Dodd, as usual, to provide the excitement with a hard fought 21-20 win. Bernie Owen and Robby Franklin started the back 4 off with easy 21-10 victories and when Billy Atkinson carded a 21-15 win a complete clean sweep was on the cards again for the Vics. Skipper Mally Johnson, forever the gentleman however, refused to win going down 15-21 in the last game of the night. The final victory margin of 93 shots gives no indication of slip ups in the title run in and the Vics move 3 points clear at the top of the table after Manor Road lost at home to Queens Royal.

Presidents Cup Semi Final to be completed Wednesday 11th August.

The remaining 4 blocks in the Wallasey Presidents Cup Semi Final will return next Wednesday 11th August at 7-00pm to complete the match. The Vics hold a 20 shot advantage at the Vanser green in Central Park Wallasey.

Billy blasts away again in “A” team demolition job.

Billy Atkinson blasted his way to a brilliant 21-04 victory today as the afternoon “A” team totally demolished Higher Tranmere “B” at home. With Mally Johnson chipping in with an easy 21-07 win and Ian Cameron and Dick Peake both winning 21-11, a big home victory was on the cards. Eddie Clayburn, continuing his good form of the last 5 days, won 21-12 and Captain Brian Ibbotson weighed in with a good 21-13 win. Robby Franklin and Bernie Owen both won 21-14 and when Elwyn Williams came in with a hard fought 21-18 victory the Vics had 9 winners of the ten games. Only George Morgan went down but he managed to overcome his obvious discomfort with a badly arthritic knee by posting a very close 20-21. The eventual winning margin was a huge 84 shots and a possible away win might be on the way next week.

Narrow 11 shot away defeat for “B” team.

Stan Ridgway’s “”B” team put up a good performance yesterday afternoon away to Capenhurst but eventually went down by 11 shots. Lawrie Blackburn starred with a stunning 21-03 victory at the away green. With C.K.Pau and Robby Franklin both winning 21-16 and Tony Ryding a 21-17 winner the Vics were looking good for a rare away win. Unfortunately however despite good performances by Chris Williams 17-21 and 82 year old Bill Powell 20-21 the Vics could only post 1 more winning card with Bill Tottey 21-19 doing the job. This was however a much improved away performance by the “B” team and the aggregate point looks good in next weeks return encounter.

Cup Semi Final abandoned in fierce storms at Vanser.

Last nights Wallasey Presidents Cup Semi Final between the Vics and Sacred Heart had to be abandoned after torrential rain and thunderstorms called a halt to play with the Vics 20 shots to the good despite conceding a handicap of 30 shots. With only eights blocks completed the Vics with 7 winners look to be on the way to yet another final. Nothing however can be taken for granted and the final 4 blocks need to concentrate fully on the job in hand. Robby Hall and Matty Gilmore managed to pull 26 shots of the handicap back with Robby winning 21-07 and Matty 21-09. Anthony Thompson 21-10, Karl Sherbrooke 21-11 and Dave Gilmore 21-12 piled on the pressure with comprehensive victories. Robby Fitzpatrick won 21-20 but the game of the night was a “titanic”, no pun intended with all the water about, struggle between Ian Sherbrooke and Mick Andrews. Andrews had slung his way into a 14-0 lead before Ian managed to rest the jack off him and then Ian, shortening the mark a touch, began his comeback to such an extent that in the end Ian triumphed 21-20 consigning Mick to his second such score against the Vics in 5 days. With Peter Dodd losing to 13 despite a good performance the Vics led 160-110 after the 8 blocks. Taking into account the 30 shots handicap the final 4 start 20 shots to the good when the match resumes.

“Rampant Robby” and “Explosive Eddie” star in 98 shot win for Vics.

Robby Franklin once again starred for the Vics Birkenhead league side last night, with another rampaging 21-05 victory. He was well backed up by an explosive performance by Eddie Clayburn who had an easy 21-06 win. The Vics triumphed by 98 shots over Harrison Park in another consistent home performance. Captain Ian Sherbrooke and Trevor Rodgers both had great 21-08 victories and there were a trio of 21-10 winners in Peter Dodd, Bernie Owen and Mike Skipworth. Mally Johnson with a comfortable 21-11 and Karl Sherbrooke ( only a slight crush tonight) 21-13 both won and the night was completed by the welcome return to the fold of George Morgan with a close 21-20 victory after looking down and out at 18-20. George produced a tremendous effort under an obvious handicap, with his bad knee causing a very pronounced limp as he walked from end to end. It is good to see George back playing for the club and we hope he can continue for a few years yet. With 10 winners the Vics once again proved that they are a formidable side at home. A few away victories are required to back up this home form hopefully starting on Friday at Harrison Park.
