Robby tops Birkenhead averages.

Robby Franklin tops the Birkenhead league averages with seven games to go. Robby winning 11 losing 3 has an average of 1.42. Tony Vyskocil won 9 lost 4 average 1.40 lies in second place. Skipper Ian Sherbrooke is third won 12 lost 3 average 1.31. Billy Atkinson is in fourth place won 11 lost 4 average 1.30. Trevor Rodgers is in fifth place having won 8 lost 4 with an average of 1.19 with Neil Sherbrooke sixth won 9 lost 5 with his average of 1.14. Karl Sherbrooke lies seventh won 7 lost 7 with an average of 1.05. The fact that we only have seven players in plus averages underlines the belief that the squad is not consistent enough to challenge the top four teams in the league.

13 shot defeat at Oxton for Birkenhead side despite 7 winners away from home.

The Birkenhead league side suffered a narrow 13 shot defeat away at Oxton last night in a game which once again underlined the fact that we just don’t have enough players in the squad to become a really top class outfit at the moment. With 7 winners away from home for the second time this season, we somehow still managed to lose the game. With both skipper Ian Sherbrooke 21-12 and Tony Vyskocil 21-09 in tremendous form in the 1st four along with “Crusher” Sherbrooke’s 21-15 the Vics looked well on the way to a vital away victory. With Neil Sherbrooke 21-16, Robby Franklin 21-19 and Colin Saville 21-20 all winning in the middle four the Vics were looking good for the 2 points. Billy Atkinson 21-20 proved to be the only winner in the back four and with Peter Dodd on 16 being the best of the losing cards the Vics could not hold onto the lead. The home game on Monday will we hope produce the aggregate point but these close away games have to be won if we want to finish in the top five again.

What a difference the home green makes, as “B” team lose at Village.

The afternoon “B” team suffered a 37 shot defeat at Port Sunlight Village yesterday with only one winner on the day. After demolishing the “Village” by 85 shots at home last week, the Vics travelled in the hope of a league double and the much needed aggregate point. Things didn’t turn out as expected though on the slow but tricky Sunlight green. With Eddie Dodd 17-21 and Stan Ridgway 18-21 in the 1st four, having close games and Bill Spraggett and Chris Williams both 17-21 also involved in close matches, the only winner on the day Harry Preston 21-14 could not save the Vics from going down to eventual defeat by 37 shots. The Vics did however manage the aggregate point but will have to travel better in future away games. The rearranged cup game, rained off on Wednesday will take place next Thursday 22nd July at Higher Tranmere.

“C” team complete double over Burtons.

The afternoon “C” team continued their march towards the title when they defeated Burtons “B” at Moreton yesterday afternoon. With 93 year old Sid Dutton recalled to the team, and doing extremely well to get 19 in the warm sunshine the Vics were victorious by 13 shots. Stand in skipper Eric Neal, last man on the green with the Vics trailing by 2, came up with a tremendous match winning 21-06 victory. This win together with John Dodd’s excellent 21-10, also in the back four, complemented earlier wins for Stan Evans 21-11, Ernie Peers 21-13 and Bill Tottey 21-14. Ken Bidwell, in his 1st away game, continued his winning run with a hard fought 21-18 victory. Mike Washington in his 1st outing of the season performed admirably against a very tough opponent and both John Davies and Andy Fergus gave good support to the overall team effort.
