Royal “flushed” as Vics hold trump cards in 33 shot Harold Jones Cup final Victory.

The Vics retained the Harold Jones Cup tonight with a 33 shot win over Queens Royal on a cold and grey evening at Manor Road. Neil Sherbrooke, Karl Sherbrooke and Dave Gilmore laid the early foundations with three great 21-10 victories to leave the Vics 28 shots ahead after the first four blocks. The middle four blocks saw Anthony Thompson 21-11 and Tony Vyskocil 21-15 help to increase the lead to 38 shots. Royal fared better in the last four with Ian Hazlehurst having a 21-09 victory over Peter Dodd, but with Robby Franklin 21-14 and Robby Hall 21-20, both winning, the final tally was West Kirby Victoria 228 to Queens Royal 195. With Ian Sherbrooke, Billy Atkinson and Matty Gilmore all in the high teens with their scores and Robby Fitzpatrick scoring 20 the Vics had too much overall firepower for Queens Royal and proved worthy winners of their third trophy of the season. With the Five a Side trophy, the George Gilmore Memorial Trophy and now the Harold Jones cup in the Vics posession already, the Vics are hunting an unprecedented five trophies this season. The Presidents Cup and the League Title being the two competitions still to be fought for. With Anthony Thompson winning the Federation Merit and Tony Vyskocil winning the Wallasey Merit and Matty Gilmore one half of the Tom Basnett Pairs winning combination, the Vics are having an unbelievable season in the Wallasey Association. Once again the team appreciated the support of club members not involved in the match. Skipper Mally Johnson thanked his team for a “great performance” whilst commiserating with Queens Royal.
