“Magical” Matty and “Ruthless” Ray prove too strong for Billy and Trevor.

On a fine night at Quarry Vikings tonight, Matty Gilmore and Ray Woods proved too strong a pairing for the Vics duo of Billy Atkinson and Trevor Rodgers in the Tom Basnett Pairs Final. Billy and Trevor had progressed serenely into the final with a last eight 21-08 win and a semi final 21-11 victory but met their match in the final against Matty and his, wily old fox of a partner, Ray. With Matty leading superbly and Ray showing all his old style in taking points when needed or blocking the line the final was won 21-06. Billy and Trevor could not reproduce their form of earlier rounds in the final but did themselves proud by knocking out some strong parings on the way there. Matty and Ray had shown their mettle when coming from 18-10 down in the quarter finals to beat another Vics duo of Dave Gilmore and Tony Vyskocil.
